Backpack Buddies

Holy Trinity Joins with Frederick Douglass Elementary in Backpack Buddies Program!

On behalf of the Social Ministry committee and the staff of Frederick Douglass Elementary School, a sincere thank you to all the Holy Trinity members that participated in our recent BackPack Buddies food program.

For the many people who have asked about the food needs of these children during summer vacation, Loudoun County Public School (through their division of School Nutrition Services) has a Summer Feeding Program.  There are nine schools designated throughout the county that will service breakfast and lunch at no charge to children 18 years of age or younger throughout most of the summer months.  There are also several County meal programs available that can supplement or fill the gaps in the school program.

The 2017-18 school year begins on August 24, 2017.  We will take a short summer hiatus for Backpack Buddies food collections, but we will have the shopping cart ready on Sunday, August 6, in preparation for opening day in the county schools!  Please keep a list of the items needed in your wallet and stock-up this summer.

Questions? Pat and Roger Bailey –

Since 2012, Holy Trinity has successfully partnered with Frederick Douglass Elementary in Leesburg by providing Christmas gifts through our Angel Tree outreach program. Our Social Ministry Committee has expanded this collaboration with Douglass by joining together with them in their Backpack Buddies program. In Loudoun County there are over 11,000 children that are food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food.” At Frederick Douglass, there are nearly 90 children classified as “food insecure”. Every Friday, the Backpack Buddies program sends home a bag of individual serving-size foods sufficient for the weekend needs of these children.  Holy Trinity members and Little Blessings families are asked to consider donating different foods from the Backpack Buddies list of needed items. Please place the items in the shopping cart in the Gathering Area. Social Ministry members will deliver these to Frederick Douglass for inclusion in the weekend backpacks.
