Backpack Buddies

The Backpack Buddies partnership between Holy Trinity and Frederick Douglass Elementary will continue into the school year 2017-18.  With schools opening on
August 24th, it is time for us to begin collecting food for this community outreach program!
According to a recent article in Loudoun Now, “In Loudoun, just more than 13,500 students come from families with an income low enough to participate in the federal free and reduced-price meal program. That’s 17 percent of the overall student population.”  At Frederick Douglass there are approximately 90 children that meet this classification.  To ensure that these children have adequate weekend food sources, backpacks filled with individual-serving sized foods are sent home each Friday by the school – hence the name Backpack Buddies.
The Backpack Buddies shopping cart has returned and donations can be placed inside at any time.  We will store these items until the start of the school year when the weekly Backpack Buddies deliveries begin at Frederick Douglass.
Please consider adding one or two items to your shopping list each week.  An insert with the needed foods is on the poster next to the shopping cart.
Childhood hunger is a very real problem in Loudoun County and Holy Trinity CAN make a difference each week with our food donations.
