Lenten Reflections

Exactly, what is it about Jesus, anyway?

Maybe that is not the way you would ask the question.  But that would be the way that you would hear it asked by someone who can’t see a way to make a connection to God. For us, we can easily get distracted or just lose focus about what exactly Jesus is all about. Lent is a time of reflection and re-connecting to the core of our faith in Jesus Christ.  Come let us sharpen our faith together with the Noon on Wednesday Reflections.  In these three short reflections we will highlight the central point of what Jesus is really about for us and for others that ask us.

New Sunday Morning Schedule

Beginning Sunday, February 12, we will offer one worship service at 9:30 AM with Christian Education and Fellowship Hour following at 10:45 AM. Kori Lord, our wonderful paid nursery attendant, will continue to be available for nursery care during the new worship time.

While it may seem counterintuitive, we have combined the worship services so that the energy and excitement can be consolidated. When visitors come to check us out, we hope they will stay and accept the invitation to be a part of the ministry here at Holy Trinity.

This schedule will be in effect through August. It will be reevaluated at the end of the summer or when our new permanent pastor is able to help us review it. We appreciate the challenges and sacrifices that some families will be making to support this move.

Please contact Congregation Council President John Sapienza, or any other Council or Staff member, with questions you may have.

Inclement Weather Policy

Since all weather reports indicate that a snow event is in our immediate future…. The following is Holy Trinity’s Inclement Weather Policy:

  • Programming for youth, specifically Wednesday Night, LIVE!, youth choir rehearsals, Little Blessing Preschool, etc., will follow the lead of Loudoun County Public Schools. If the schools are closed due to inclement weather, then HTLC youth programming will be cancelled.
  • The HTLC church office will follow the lead of Loudoun County government. If Loudoun County government offices are closed, the HTLC church office will also be closed.
  • Committee chairs and outside groups shall make a decision as to whether or not their committees or groups will meet. All are encouraged to use extreme caution and keep in mind the conditions of the roads and parking lot.
  • For events taking place on the weekend, a message will be left on the Church Office’s voice mail and a message will be posted on our website, www.holytrinityleesburg.org , as to whether or not the building is open for use.

Please remember that our first concern is everyone’s safety!

Backpack Buddies

Holy Trinity Joins with Frederick Douglass Elementary in Backpack Buddies Program!

On behalf of the Social Ministry committee and the staff of Frederick Douglass Elementary School, a sincere thank you to all the Holy Trinity members that participated in our recent BackPack Buddies food program.

For the many people who have asked about the food needs of these children during summer vacation, Loudoun County Public School (through their division of School Nutrition Services) has a Summer Feeding Program.  There are nine schools designated throughout the county that will service breakfast and lunch at no charge to children 18 years of age or younger throughout most of the summer months.  There are also several County meal programs available that can supplement or fill the gaps in the school program.

The 2017-18 school year begins on August 24, 2017.  We will take a short summer hiatus for Backpack Buddies food collections, but we will have the shopping cart ready on Sunday, August 6, in preparation for opening day in the county schools!  Please keep a list of the items needed in your wallet and stock-up this summer.

Questions? Pat and Roger Bailey – baileyva@mac.com

Since 2012, Holy Trinity has successfully partnered with Frederick Douglass Elementary in Leesburg by providing Christmas gifts through our Angel Tree outreach program. Our Social Ministry Committee has expanded this collaboration with Douglass by joining together with them in their Backpack Buddies program. In Loudoun County there are over 11,000 children that are food insecure. Food insecurity is defined as the “limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food.” At Frederick Douglass, there are nearly 90 children classified as “food insecure”. Every Friday, the Backpack Buddies program sends home a bag of individual serving-size foods sufficient for the weekend needs of these children.  Holy Trinity members and Little Blessings families are asked to consider donating different foods from the Backpack Buddies list of needed items. Please place the items in the shopping cart in the Gathering Area. Social Ministry members will deliver these to Frederick Douglass for inclusion in the weekend backpacks.

We Welcome New Members

The Connections team welcomes new Members to our community of faith in the New Year!

January 22, after the 11:00 Worship Service, Join us for “Pizza with Pastor.”  Pastor Heidi and lay leaders will be available to talk about Holy Trinity programs and answer questions while everyone enjoys some food and beverages.

February 5, 2017 is our next New Member Sunday.  We’ll have a special welcome during worship, followed by our yearly “Chili Fest.”  Each new member will have a sponsor who will get to know the family prior to New Member Sunday, and help introduce our new member(s) to other members.  The sponsor will continue as a contact for the new family to alert them to upcoming HTLC events through the coming year.

If you are willing to consider being a sponsor and/or helping with the “Pizza with Pastor” event, please contact Laurie Dieffenbach (ldieffenbach@live.com) or Gretchen Luebbe (gmluebbe@verizon.net). If you would like to become a member of Holy Trinity at this time, please speak with Pastor Heidi. (pastor@holytrinityleesburg.org.)

Advent Angels at HTLC

Calling all potential Christmas Angels …

It’s that time of year when our thoughts turn to angels and the important role they played in the story of Jesus’ birth. Angels are messengers. You too can be an angel and spread the Good News of Jesus birth and His love for all by participating in our Advent Angel programs.

Interested adults can sign up starting Sunday, November 19 to be an “Advent Angel” to one or more of our Sunday School children. (Preschool through Grade 8.) The identity of our “Angels” will remain a secret until they reveal themselves during the at the reception following the Sunday School Christmas Program on Sunday, December 17.

What does it take to be an Advent Angel?

  • Look for the Angel Kiosk in the commons.
  • Pick up as many envelopes as you want. You can be an angel to more than one child.
  • Send a card to your assigned child(ren) sometime during the Advent season.
  • Send your child(ren) a Christmas Card.
  • Place an “Angel” ornament on the Christmas Tree in The Commons.
  • Plan to meet in the Sanctuary on December 17 following the Sunday School Christmas Program (about 11:45 a.m.) to reveal your identity and greet your “angel” child.

Our long heritage of advent angels has shown that the effects of your “angel” ministry will extend far beyond this season!  Thank you for participating in this beloved tradition.

Children Tell The Story

The Very Important Christmas Pageant

Sunday, December 18, 2016

During the 11:00 am Worship

During the month of December, our Sunday School children learn the “non-commercial” story of Christmas.  This is done not only thru lessons but also thru the children learning a special production that they present to the congregation during Worship.  Every Sunday School Child in grades Preschool thru 5 has an opportunity to participate in this special production.  The kids love the costumes, songs, and camaraderie, and they especially enjoy the opportunity to tell the story of Christ’s Birth.  Parts are assigned with each child’s wishes and talent in mind, resulting in a special worship experience not to be missed.

Important Dates:

Christmas Program Rehearsals (during Sunday School Hour – 9:45am)

  • Nov. 27
  • Dec 4
  • Dec 11
  • Dec 18

Dress Rehearsal (Grades K-5)

Children’s Time in Worship

Little Children, Parents, Teens and Adults all enjoy seeing how Pastor Heidi turns the “Basket Surprise” into this week’s Children Sermon!   Each week a different child gets to bring in the special basket, with an item they’ve chosen to “Stump the Pastor.”   The result… lots of smiles, and a surprisingly good tie in with the Gospel!  We invite all children and their families to join us each Sunday at 8:30 am or 11:00 am for Sunday Worship!  All are Welcome!

Place in their hands Holy Scripture

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly….” Colossians 3:16

One of the promises we make as our children are baptized is to “place in their hands the holy scriptures.” Here at Holy Trinity we take that promise seriously and gift our fourth grade students with Bibles. This year, Bibles will be presented on Reformation Sunday, October 30 at the 11:00 AM service. If your child is in the fourth grade you will receive a letter in the mail with the specifics for the day. If your child is older than fourth grade and has not received a Bible, please contact Mary Samios (email ChildrensMinistry@holytrinityleesburg.org or call 703.777.4912 x4).
